Who we are

John Rosen, DIRECTOR

The El Casal program has been developed by John Rosen, an experienced educator and mentor. John earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado and his MA in Spanish Literature from New York University. He taught for nine years at the New Hampton School (NH) before taking up a post at Milton Academy (MA), where he stayed for ten years, serving as Modern Language Department Chairman, soccer coach and dormitory house parent.

He served as Resident Director of School Year Abroad, first in Barcelona and subsequently in Zaragoza, Spain from 1997 until 2002. At School Year Abroad, John taught AP Spanish Language and Spanish Literature, while supervising all the day-to-day aspects of student life, including the curriculum, the host family arrangements, overnight travel, extracurricular activities and college counseling. He also managed the school site and the business affairs of the program.

Inés Trias, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Inés Trias earned degrees in Psychology and Art History from the Universidad Central de Barcelona. She taught Art History, History of Spain and Spanish Language and Literature at School Year Abroad from 1987 until 2002. Her extensive experience working with American high schoolers and her intimate knowledge of Barcelona and Catalonian culture make her an invaluable resource for El Casal participants

Mission Statement

El Casal seeks to provide a challenging and rewarding atmosphere for personal and intellectual growth in a program for young people who are taking time off between high school and college. We strive to develop creative and critical thinking, tolerance, self-confidence and a deep appreciation of the host culture.

About Our Logo

Our logo show fragments of trencadis — a mosaic of broken pieces of ceramic tiles — from Barcelona's Park Güell, designed by Catalán architect Antoni Gaudí.

The trencadis serves as a metaphor for the El Casal experience, in that each participant will, inevitably, combine the pieces of the adventure in his or her own way. We hope that you will leave Spain having made your own colorful mosaic of the time spent with us. The trencadis may also be seen as a metaphor for the program participants themselves, in that El Casal welcomes people with differing backgrounds, passions and personal histories in the hope that each will contribute to the mosaic of the program, forming a mutually enriching experience

What is a "casal" ?

What is a "casal"?

If you think casal has something to do with casa, you're pretty close! In Catalán, casal — in addition to meaning "house" or "home" — can also mean "center", as in "cultural center" or "recreation center."

A casal is a warm and welcoming place where people with common interests can meet and interact.

WE HOPE YOU'LL FEEL AT HOME IN OUR CASAL!
